Investigations on the development of self-healing properties in protective coatings for concrete and repair mortars.

In Europe, it has been estimated that 50% of the annual construction budget is spent on refurbishment and remediation of the existing structures in order to prolong their service life. As this figure is expected to increase, there is a strong requirement for durable repair materials. However, recent studies have demonstrated that protective coatings for concrete and repair mortars have a short durability. For the protective coatings, the life span of the repair layers is shorter than the initial one unless removing all the coating and performing all the preparation steps of the surface. For the mortars, the Conrepnet [1] network demonstrated that 20% of the repairs fail during the first 5 years and 55% fail during the first 10 years. One of the main causes of these poor performances is due to the microcracking of the repair materials allowing water or aggressive agents to migrate inside the material and inducing degradation mechanisms such as corrosion reactions. In this context, the main objective of this project was to investigate the possibility of developing self-healing properties in protective coatings and repair mortars in order to increase their life span.
